This seems like a really whimsical title, but there really were rhinos in the playground at Mokolodi Nature Preserve during our trip to southern Africa in 2009. The rhinos, which are rescued from other areas where they are being poached, roam quite freely throughout the preserve. They're definitely not tame, but they're also much calmer than rhinos I've seen in other places.</div>

It should be fun-- at least 5 bands, and Pinguim will play with all of them!<br />

By the time we got to Tara, although it wasn't raining, it was very windy, and overcast. The creaking hinges on the stiles to go into the site were enhanced considerably by the blowing wind. The crows in the trees over the old churchyard were haunting in their warnings to each other. You would think they would be used to people all around them by now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But it wasn't just the cries of the crows that were haunting. The trees they live in were bare of leaves, and formed amazing shapes against the overcast sky.<br />

The rest of the hilltop is quite open and while there are many markers of various kinds, it feels completely unrestricted. By contrast, the stone fence-enclosed churchyard feels slightly claustrophobic, and the crows clearly do not appreciate the intrusion.Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4981574588665748874.post-6556694778601084152012-04-28T20:39:00.003-07:002012-04-28T20:39:19.116-07:00Matt's first trip to Stonehenge<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We made the pilgrimage to Stonehenge on a blustery day in late March-- hour or so to Salisbury from Waterloo Station, a wait for the bus, then about 35 minutes from Salisbury to the site. I had a conference-- not a great conference, but it was in Paris. I've never really liked Paris before. I've been there a few times. Usually I get sore feet and get to see a lot of quite grey buildings, all somewhat block-like, and stand around thinking, do I really want to stand in that line? Do I really want to try to eat at that bistro where the wait staff will sneer at my pathetic attempts to recall high school French? This time, I went to my meetings, dutifully, and ate uninteresting sandwiches, while Matt went trotting around Paris having a good time without anyone being rude to him because he speaks no French at all and doesn't even try. After my meeting was over, uneventfully other than my pissing off a lot of important people, I joined Matt in his trots around Paris and had a really good time. His friends Vincent and Pamela met us one day and took us up to a cathedral high on the hillside where you get great views of Paris rooftops and chimney tops, much more interesting than the street view of the same buildings, and we had a great lunch without any sneering being had at all. Then Matt and I trotted around some more and went to the Charles de Gaulle art museum, and a few other places, eschewed the lines, and had a great time.<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4981574588665748874.post-62551382225294352672009-09-21T19:42:00.000-07:002009-09-21T19:42:43.504-07:00Europeans have the coolest vehicles...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PwyR9SVxADNmbom1X5DXSXmO9sX9lT9uSwISCgLesn65Bpk3Q5TmsPdcpp97-IFOkK1OzFATlOpuog01rW7vDCjlIozmtG0woYo6T7OG-ZWUr1hgOZraU_vMp9GHL0a1feMbhtWnOMI/s1600-h/P1030845.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; FLOAT: left; CLEAR: both" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PwyR9SVxADNmbom1X5DXSXmO9sX9lT9uSwISCgLesn65Bpk3Q5TmsPdcpp97-IFOkK1OzFATlOpuog01rW7vDCjlIozmtG0woYo6T7OG-ZWUr1hgOZraU_vMp9GHL0a1feMbhtWnOMI/s160/P1030845.JPG" /></a> Really. It's some kind of three wheeled motorbike, but while most of these that you see in north America just look kind of dumb, this one is very very cool.<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4981574588665748874.post-61085766953303227102009-09-21T19:40:00.000-07:002009-09-21T19:40:39.430-07:00another one for Lulina<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwVPFAMhjVz4BBOOyNu5JffYtGEuMZENGdLXu8cfCBJY0avl3mkyCg5R8XLvXLKowXAV5aC_2cfnI6gVpGMRLPZhqP-fojFO3KcfupHaf8VjLl4tJt3I_mJIBLjeYKokf5flKsL9JDwSg/s1600-h/P1030841.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; FLOAT: left; CLEAR: both" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwVPFAMhjVz4BBOOyNu5JffYtGEuMZENGdLXu8cfCBJY0avl3mkyCg5R8XLvXLKowXAV5aC_2cfnI6gVpGMRLPZhqP-fojFO3KcfupHaf8VjLl4tJt3I_mJIBLjeYKokf5flKsL9JDwSg/s160/P1030841.JPG" /></a> I have no idea who Lucia Iman is...<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4981574588665748874.post-32677688921977429502009-09-21T19:35:00.000-07:002009-09-21T19:36:02.459-07:00and one more from Athens<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfgUCMAAy2DSE2GMJodIShFr0W7-fZ0GyyxwHVuUK6eXVoChMF2ydJUFONdfhDHFPEPViq-lUMb6qnO7W3KOAkzmtI-0d5YdJEq3ilHIpQ9ZiaJBUPfKDcxEnyPY7FZ6Wq8-YKtgnPjs4/s1600-h/P1030399.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; FLOAT: left; CLEAR: both" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfgUCMAAy2DSE2GMJodIShFr0W7-fZ0GyyxwHVuUK6eXVoChMF2ydJUFONdfhDHFPEPViq-lUMb6qnO7W3KOAkzmtI-0d5YdJEq3ilHIpQ9ZiaJBUPfKDcxEnyPY7FZ6Wq8-YKtgnPjs4/s160/P1030399.JPG" /></a> This icon doesn't even exist any longer, but Georgianne Olive has a picture of it. She was our very gracious hostess through our day and night tour of Athens, and is one of the most knowledgeable people in the universe about Athens, REM, the B-52s, and pretty much anything of Georgia and the Atlantic seaboard south. We had a wonderful time, thanks to her hospitality, and we learned a lot!<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4981574588665748874.post-15749939036734653442009-09-21T19:31:00.000-07:002009-09-21T19:31:24.433-07:00enacting the pilgrimage<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj117FpWkkvUd-b0dmZvPjCckGH5U9jw-zjEVKiwb-rQxt3oVDnuowUA1iWbakYdG-JE_u98nfX85EGGw0Tt0zsZQSagtBTZsbV0iims3yJnelwhxohyphenhyphenfPERXw8W1R6NRe6O_Iep7pGnJU/s1600-h/P1030382.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; FLOAT: left; CLEAR: both" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj117FpWkkvUd-b0dmZvPjCckGH5U9jw-zjEVKiwb-rQxt3oVDnuowUA1iWbakYdG-JE_u98nfX85EGGw0Tt0zsZQSagtBTZsbV0iims3yJnelwhxohyphenhyphenfPERXw8W1R6NRe6O_Iep7pGnJU/s160/P1030382.JPG" /></a> Well, we took pictures of everything we could find in Athens, including the outside of Michael Stipes' house, which is mostly bamboo everywhere. And we decided that the deepest homage was to pose with the ultimate Athens icon, the bulldog. They even inter them in the wall of the shrine-- that is to say, the football stadium.<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Anne Saleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00998895507402622718noreply@blogger.com0
